Weezer Close Out ‘SZNZ’ Project with Final Solstice EP ‘Winter’

Today, Dec. 21, marks the winter solstice and retroactively the conclusion of Weezer’s zealous year-long seasonal EP project SZNZ. In line with the cold dark days, the American rock band’s final seven-song installment is stately and melancholy.
Ahead of SZNZ: Winter release, Weezer–who teased the theme of the winter installment in a 2021 interview on Good Morning America as “sad acoustic, Elliot Smith-style”–shared just one single, the acoustic and introspective “I Want a Dog.” With the full project released, songs like “The One That Got Away,” “Dark Enough to See the Stars,” and “Sheraton Commander” double down on that lonesome winter feeling. However, the project doesn’t shy away from the united crunching guitar and heavy gain that the band is loved for and which was seen throughout the project’s other segments: SZNZ: Spring, released on March 20; SZNZ: Summer, released on June 21; and SZNZ: Autumn, which was shared on Sept. 22.
It’s notable that Weezer had planned to perform all four EPs during a Broadway Residency in the fall of 2022 but was canceled due to low ticket sales and high expenses. As for the new year, Weezer have a few dates lined up, including festival slots at Innings Festival and Railbird Music Festival.
