Wavy Gravy’s 90th Birthday Bash and Benefit Concert to Feature Cat Power, Steve Earle, Todd Rundgren, Peter Rowan and More
A myriad of artists will take part in Wavy Gravy’s 90th birthday bash and benefit concert on May 16 at the Masonic in San Francisco. The counterculture personality and hippie activist will be honored by a roster of musical talent, led by Steve Earle, Todd Rundgren and Rickie Lee Jones. The event also doubles as a giveback for Seva, “a global nonprofit eye care organization that works with local communities around the world to develop self-sustaining programs that preserve and restore sight.”
Joining the musical roster led by Earle, Rundgren and Jones are Cat Power, Peter Rowan, Maria Muldaur, Harper Simon, Dan “Lebo” Lebowitz, and the man of the hour. The aforementioned music guests will receive support from a house band that includes Tony Garnier, Greg Leisz, Matt Rollings, Denny Fongheiser, Teresa Williams and Vicki Randle. The official post outlining the imminent Golden City occasion notes that surprise special guests will be added–see below.
The beneficiary’s prominence arose from the 1960’s counterculture movement and is perhaps best tied to his role as the Grateful Dead’s official clown. Born Hugh Romney, B.B. King gave him the title “Wavy Gravy.” In his nearly nine-decade run, Wavy Gravy MC’d Woodstock, produced live shows, and used his status to support others’ well-being, under a do-good mission that remains a cornerstone of his legacy.
Wavy Gravy co-founded the Seva Foundation, an international non-profit organization dedicated to curing preventable blindness and advancing other health initiatives. To learn more or make a donation, visit www.seva.org.
