Mount Pleasant, NC will soon be home to a theater named after The Avett Brothers. As reported by the Charlotte Business Journal¸ a group of investors and historic preservationists in Cabarrus County have raised $3.75 million to renovate an 80-year-old abandoned movie theater, the Paula Theater, which has sat empty for decades. If all goes according to plan, then The Avett Theater is expected to be fully operational by the end of 2027.
Charlotte Business Journal also explains that “Dr. Allen Dobson, retired president of Cabarrus Family Medicine and an ardent preservationist in Mount Pleasant, the Cabarrus town that includes the old theater, told CBJ the nonprofit entity behind the project has raised $1.4 million—or nearly half the total cost. Dobson chairs the nonprofit, Mt. Pleasant Theatre Inc.” In addition to packing summer sheds and concert halls around the country, The Avett Brothers also ventured into theater with their musical Swept Away, which ran on Broadway in 2024.
The Avett Brothers hail from nearby Concord, NC and co-founders Seth and Scott still live in the area. They will perform at Roanoke, VA’s Elmwood Park tomorrow.
