On Saturday, May 10, Warren Haynes Band took their Million Voices Whisper tour to the Majestic Ventura Theatre in Ventura, Calif., to support Haynes’ latest solo album of the same name. During the concert’s latter half, the bandleader welcomed 12-year-old guitar prodigy, Saxon Weiss, to riff on the Little Milton original, turned Jerry Garcia Band-associated cover, “That’s What Love Will Make You Do.”

Before their guest took the stage, Haynes and company worked through an array of material that nodded to the bandleader’s independent catalog, including the Million Voices Whisper feature, “Go Down Swinging,” before going back in time and arriving on Man in Motion’s “Sick of My Shadow,” with a tease of his Allman roots on “Blue Sky.” Eventually, the ensemble returned to the aforementioned 2024 release on “This Life As We Know It.”

The first set yielded an interval of “What Is Hip?” into “I’ve Been Working,” before reprising the jam starter. “You Ain’t Above Me” and ABB’s “Instrumental Illness” merged into the concert’s halfway break. The second frame commenced on another Million Voices Whisper feature, “From Here On Out,” and the Allen Toussaint original, “From a Whisper to a Scream,” which effectively set up Weiss’ arrival.

The young musician supported Haynes and his band, pulling up on stage like a young Derek Trucks and adding to a rip-roaring rendition of “That’s What Love Will Make You Do.”  Perhaps the most enduring part of the performance was the exchange of encouraging glances between players Haynes and Weiss and Weiss and Kevin Scott.

The second set continued with more pulls from Haynes’ illustrious career, including a packed rendition of “Invisible” with nods to the classic Traffic cover “Feelin’ Alright” (two nights out from Steve Winwood’s May 12 birthday), The Allman Brothers Band on “Les Brers In A Minor” and more. The band returned for the concert’s encore, fan favorite, “Soulshine.”
