Watch: The Late Taylor Hawkins Talks Generational Inspiration and the Grateful Dead in Justin Kreutzmann’s Documentary ‘Let There Be Drums!’

Today Greenwich Entertainment released the Justin Kreutzmann-directed documentary, Let There Be Drums!. The film examines the essential role of drumming and the passing of influence and inspiration from generation to generation.

The through hours of interviews with drumming legends, including the late and legendary Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins, Ringo Starr, The Police’s Stewart Copeland, the Grateful Dead’s Mickey Hart, along with Justin’s father Bill Kreutzmann, Jane’s Addictions Stephen Perkins, The Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Chad Smith and Matt Sorum of Guns N’ Roses, the younger Kreutzmann explores his lifelong fascination.

One of the highlights of the documentary, which is screening now in select theaters and streaming on Apple TV and Amazon Prime Video, showcases Hawkins speaking of his connection with the Grateful Dead.

“I saw them once,” Taylor Hawkins said in a clip initially shared by The Daily Beast. “At first, I was like, what’s going on? And everybody was, like, passing food around to each other and the song’s kind of starting, but have they even started the fucking song yet? They’re, like, jamming. Is everyone on stage yet? Everyone’s throwing energy and, you know, passing each other doobies and shit … and I’m like, oh OK, they don’t know how they’re going to start this song. They just do this improvisational-jazz thing. That got me good.”

“I’m not going to say I’m a huge Deadhead, but I love the chances they were taking the whole time,” Hawkins continued to say. “Three days after that show, I had to go to Europe to do a two-week tour with the Foo Fighters. And I just started taking a lot more chances, and I had some of the best shows I’ve had in a long time, if not ever.
