With March Madness upon us, reputable basketball dad and fan of the game Bruce Hornsby has shared a new clip outlining the meaning behind the second single, “Ecstatic,” from his forthcoming LP Indigo Park, due on April 3 via Zappo Productions/Thirty Tigers. After previously debuting the track and its official music video on March 4, Hornsby shared the inspiration behind the piece’s chant-like appeal and the motivation that beckons to his kin’s basketball ties.
Directing his attention to the camera, Hornsby explains, “It’s a song that takes place in the very odd and charged milieu of AAU basketball, at the highest level.” Providing more context, he adds, “We were the parents of a player, hanging out in the stands with the other parents. And these parents would have these great cheers. One of them was, ‘You foul, you did it, raise your hand, admit it.’ The other one was, ‘That’s right, you walked, you traveled, and got caught.’ So, I always loved those cheers. I always thought to myself, one day I’m going to put that in a song.”
In addition to the track’s chant-like promise, the bandleader tapped members of the LSU Tigers Women’s Basketball Team to take part in the campus-filmed music video. Notably, Hornsby’s son is a former LSU shooting guard and the current graduate assistant for the LSU Tigers men’s team. The track’s sing-song encouragement comes from Hornsby’s experiences in the stands, as disclosed in the aforementioned video. Watch below.
As a complete piece, Indigo Park aims to tick many stylistic boxes, spanning rock, bluegrass, jazz, classical, electronic, and beyond. The imminent release was composed as Hornsby turned 70 years old, inspiring a new wave of reflection, rooted in first-person observations, as “He contemplates formative moments from his past, sometimes trying to resolve them, and other times looking for clues about his current-day outlook,” according to the official press release.
