Last night, Dave Schools & Friends played an unannounced show at New York’s Grand Ballroom at the Manhattan Center. The event was part of Music Club, a series of intimate events where members sign up to gain access to a season of club-size shows by top-tier touring acts. While the nights’ acts are not announced in advance, previous Music Club performers have included Goose, Mt. Joy, Tedeschi Trucks Band, The Head and the Heart, Wilco, Greensky Bluegrass and Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats. Schools also played a Music Club show in Charlotte, NC last year where Stephen Stills sat in.
During yesterday’s gig, Schools was joined by an all-star band that featured guitarist Steve Kimock, Joe Russo’s Almost Dead guitarist Tom Hamilton, Trey Anastasio trumpeter Jennifer Hartswick, Terrapin Family Band drummer Alex Koford, Mike Gordon drummer John Morgan Kimock and Circles Around the Sun keyboardist Adam MacDougall. They opened their second set with Widespread Panic’s “All Time Low,” and then Warren Haynes emerged for the Gov’t Mule instrumental “Sco-Mule.” Haynes remained on stage for the rest of the set, which included The Beatles’ “She Said She Said,” the Mule’s “Beautifully Broken,” The Allman Brothers Band’s “Dreams,” The Beatles’ “Come Together,” Fleetwood Mac’s “Gold Dust Woman” and Al Green’s “Take Me to the River.” Grace Potter, one of Haynes’ frequent collaborators, also emerged for the final three songs.
Dave Schools & Friends will appear at New York’s Brooklyn Bowl this evening. For more on Schools’ current projects, be sure to read our recent interview with the bassist.
