The Roots Plot Hip Hop Is The Love of My Life Tour with Special Guests Arrested Development, Digable Planets
The Roots will set out on a cross-country tour this August with fellow alternative hip-hop legends Arrested Development and Digable Planets as special guests. The first time this trio have shared the same bill, the Hip Hop Is The Love Of My Life Tour will take the groups through the East Coast and Midwest over the course of eight dates this summer. The collaboration between the three acts, all founded between 1987 and 1988, will be a historic moment, celebrating decades of innovation in the jazz-rap and progressive hip-hop genres.
A month after meeting up at Los Angeles’ Hollywood Bowl for June 29’s Roots Picnic along with Queen Latifah, Common, the Pharcyde and Jungle Brothers, Arrested Development and Digable Planets will join the Roots on Aug. 16 at 713 Music Hall in Houston for the first show of the tour. The following night, the trio will take The Pavilion at Toyota Music Factory in Irving, Texas. On Aug. 23, the tour will run through a yet unannounced venue en route to an Aug. 24 performance at Ravinia Festival in Highland Park, Ill. Next, the ensemble will trek east to Sterling Heights, Mich. where they will play Michigan Lottery Amphitheatre at Freedom Hill on Aug. 25.
The last three dates will bring the groups to Arrested Development’s hometown of Atlanta for a show on Aug. 29 at the Cadence Bank Amphitheatre at Chastain Park. Next up will be an appearance at Vienna, Va.’s Filene Center at Wolf Trap on Aug. 31, followed by a closing evening on Sept. 1 at Boston’s MGM Music Hall at Fenway.
The mini tour comes in the midst of a busy summer schedule for the Roots, including their three Roots Picnic events, solo tour dates and a packed festival calendar including co-headlining performances in the U.K. with De La Soul. Coming up, the Roots will take the stage in The Mountain Winery Concert Series in Saratoga, Calif. on May 11.
