moe. and Umphrey’s McGee Resume Joint Tour

moe. and Umphrey’s McGee resumed their moe.ment.UM outing at Outer Banks, NC’s Roanoke Island Festival Park last night. The highly collaborative tour, as members of both groups recently discussed in a site interview, continues a musical conversation that stretches back almost 25 years. But it also arrives at an impactful time for Umphrey’s McGee: Jake Cinninger has been off the road most of the year for personal reasons and, on Tuesday, the group officially announced that the guitarist would be stepping away from Umphrey’s McGee permanently. And, the next night, Umphrey’s McGee returned to the stage for a full, two-set show at Virginia Beach, VA’s 31st Street Park Oceanfront that featured a strong second that consisting of a run from “All In Time” into “Hangover,” another extended segue from “Escape Goat” into “Slacker” and “Wide Open and, finally, a movement from “Resolution” into “Dear Lord.”

Despite Umphrey’s McGee entering a new era, last night’s moe.ment.UM concert still boasted the unique, joyful joint encores the run has become known for. Umphrey’s McGee closed yesterday’s show and, at the start of their encore segment, moe. guitarist Chuck Garvey, keyboardist Nate Wilson and drummer Vinnie Amico all emerged for a lighthearted version of Men at Work’s “Down Under,” a tune the members of Umphrey’s McGee have been covering since their earliest days–despite a few notable breaks. Amico then replaced Umphrey’s McGee drummer Scotty Zwang behind the kit and Garvey remained as Umphrey’s McGee closed their show with the original “The Silent Type.”

moe. and Umphrey’s McGee will perform at TD Amp Ballantyne in Charlotte, NC this evening. After the event wraps up, Umphrey’s McGee’s Brendan Bayliss and moe.’s Al Schnier will stage a late-night gig at the nearby Rabbit Hole.
