Yesterday, The Recording Academy announced the complete list of nominees for the 65th annual Grammy Awards set to take place at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles on Sunday, Feb. 5, 2023. The award show will air on CBS live and will be available to stream via Paramount+.
Following last year's tremulous celebration–which was pushed from Jan. 31, 2022, to April 3, 2022, and relocated from Los Angeles to Las Vegas–the 65th Grammy Awards are garnering a lot of excitement. American icon Beyoncé is nominated for nine awards, the most of any artist this year, eight of which come from her 2022 LP RENAISSANCE, while the ninth is for her song from King Richard, "Be Alive." The nine new nominations bring her up to 88 in her career so far, tying her with her husband Jay-Z for the title of most career Grammy nominations of all time.
Rapper Kendrick Lamar garnered eight nominations, four going to his most recent offering, the double album Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers, and his single/video "The Heart Part 5." With Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers' nomination for Album of the Year, every one of Lamar's albums has been nominated for the prestigious recognition. Other artists with several nominations include Adele with seven, Brandi Carlile with seven, Mary J. Blige with six, Future with six and Dj Khaled with six.
The most coveted awards: Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Album of the Year, and Best New Artist, feature a well-balanced mixture of music and artists. Record of the Year will come down to Lamar's "The Heart Part 5," ABBA's “Don’t Shut Me Down," Brandi Carlile's “You and Me On the Rock" featuring Lucius, Doja Cat's "Woman," Steve Lacy's "Bad Habit," Lizzo's "About Damn Time," Harry Styles' "As It Was," Beyoncé's “BREAK MY SOUL,” and finally Mary J. Blige “Good Morning Gorgeous.”
Lamar's "The Heart Part 5," Styles' "As It Was," Lizo's "About Damn Time," Beyoncé's “BREAK MY SOUL,” and Lacy's "Bad Habit" are also up for Song of the Year and will contend against Gayle's "abcdefu,” Taylor Swift's "All Too Well” (10 Minute Version), DJ Khaled ft. Rick Ross, Lil Wayne, Jay-Z, John Legend and Friday's “GOD DID,” Bonnie Raitt's "Just Like That," and "Easy On Me" by Adele.
Album of the Year is up for grabs between Adele for her album 30, ABBA's Voyage, the aforementioned RENAISSANCE by Beyoncé, Bad Bunny's Un Verano Sin Ti, Blige's Good Morning Gorgeous – Deluxe, Coldplay's Music of the Spheres, Lamar's Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers, Harry Styles Harry’s House, Lizzo's Special and Brandi Carlile for In These Silent Days
As for the final award of the "big four," The Best New Artist will fall into the hands of singer-songwriter Omar Apollo, Brazil's Anitta, jazz duo DOMi & JD Beck, vocalist Samara Joy, rapper Tobe Nwigwe, Italy's Måneskin, rapper Latto, Muni Long, Houston rapper Tobe Nwigwe, bluegrass darling Molly Tuttle or the British indie-rock band Wet Leg.
The final category truly showcases the welcomed diverse direction popular music is headed, along with a refreshed appreciation for live acts with roots in Americana. This appreciation can be found in several other categories, including Best Contemporary Instrumental Album, with Snarky Puppy nominated for Empire Central and Jeff Coffin's nomination for Between Dreaming and Joy.
As for Best Rock Performance, Carlile's “Broken Horses” will go against The Black Keys, IDLES, Turnstile, Ozzy Osbourne and more. While Best Americana Album will see Robert Plant & Alison Kraus's Raise The Roof contend with Keb’ Mo’s Good To Be…, Bonnie Raitt Just Like That..., the late Dr. John's Things Happen That Way.
The Infamous Stringdusters are up for Best Bluegrass Album with Toward the Fray, as are The Del McCoury Band's Almost Proud, Peter Rowan's Calling You From My Mountain, Molly Tuttle and Golden Highway's Crooked Tree and Yonder Mountain String Band's Get Yourself Outside. Gov't Mule, Taj Mahal and Ry Cooder, Buddy Guy, John Mayall and Charlie Musselwhite are up for Best Traditional Bleus Album, while Edgar Winter, Ben Haper, Eric Gales, Shemekia Copeland and North Mississippi Allstars are up for Best Contemporary Blues Album.
Other notable artists nominated for the 65th annual Grammy Awards include Arctic Monkeys, Cory Henry, Tank and the Bangas, Robert Glasper, Willie Nelson, Arron Neville Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Punch Brothers, Jacob Collier, Johnny Greenwood and more.
