The Black Crowes continue to deliver surprises during their extended Southern Hospitality tour. On Saturday night, while performing at Queens, NY’s Forest Hills Stadium, the ensemble debuted a cover of Led Zeppelin’s Physical Graffiti classic “The Rover” six songs into their set. It was the second classic-rock cut the Crowes introduced into their already sizable cover repertoire over the weekend: A night earlier, at Camden, NJ’s Freedom Mortgage Pavilion, the Crowes performed The Rolling Stones’ Goats Head Soup track “Midnight From the Inside Out” for the first time.
Moreover, on June 9, at the Riverbend Music Center in Cincinnati, OH, the Crowes busted out the Faces’ “Glad and Sorry” for the first time since September 25, 2010, with guitarist Rich Robinson taking a semi-rare turn on lead vocals. Mixing things up even more, the Crowes also revived “Midnight From the Inside Out,” from their album Lions, for the first time since August 6 of last year, and “Bad Luck Blue Eyes Goodbye,” from The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion, for the first time since October 6, 2024.
The Crowes’ decision to both introduce new covers and dust off a mix of originals is a marked change from their first tours after reuniting in 2019, when they performed their debut album Shake Your Money Maker in its entirety each night and then stuck to a mostly stock set of songs. The group will appear at Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, MD this evening.
