Brooklyn Bowl Will Once Again Host Rosh Hashanah Services in September
New York’s Brooklyn Bowl has announced the details for its annual Rosh Hashanah celebration, which will take place in September. The musically driven High Holiday service, a 15-year tradition for the venue’s community, is slated to take place Saturday, September 12 at 10am. The morning will feature a full, traditionally rooted Rosh Hashanah service, plain-sense explanations of the religious aspects of the holiday, prayer, shofar blowing, meditation and live music drawn from throughout the Jewish diaspora.
Rabbi Daniel Brenner will once again lead the service. The musical direction will be helmed by Jeremiah Lockwood, who will lead a core Bowl Hashanah band consisting of vocalist/bassist Yula Beeri, drummer John Bollinger, saxophonist and clarinet player Stuart Bogie (Joe Russo’s Almost Dead, Arcade Fire and Antibalas), trumpeter Jordan McLean (Antibalas), guitarist Timothy James (Antibalas), percussionist Isaac Gaedner and organist Yusuke Yamamoto. A mix of special guests from both the local musical community and the Jewish music scene will be confirmed in the coming weeks. Kol Nidre and Yom Kippur details will also be announced later this month.
In addition, on Friday, September 11, Rabbi Brenner, Lockwood and the same band will participate in a First Night Rosh Hashanah service at New York’s Nublu Classic at 730pm. Like the morning service at Brooklyn Bowl, the Erev Rosh Hashanah gathering will include a full, traditional service, music, meditation, shofar blowing and more. Additional musical guests will be confirmed in the coming weeks.
A limited number of Early Bird tickets are currently available for both the September 11 and September 12 services. Children’s tickets and a festive lunch option from Blue Ribbon are also available for the September 12 service.
Lockwood is currently in the midst of his annual Saturday residency at Brookyln’s Barbes. Each week he will perform with a different set of musicians. This coming Saturday, July 18, he will appear with klezmer fiddle player Jake Shulman-Ment and on Saturday, July 25 he will regroup with drummer Ricky Gordon for a Gordon Lockwood set.
