Steve Winwood Joins Tedeschi Trucks Band for Sly Stone Medley

The Tedeschi Trucks Band traveled to Connecticut to wrap up the current leg of their Live in ’25 Tour over the weekend. The first two shows took place at the Hartford HealthCare Amphitheater in Bridgeport. Steve Winwood was also on the bill for these dates, while routing through the East Coast with his own group.
Friday night’s show featured an extended collaborative moment during TTB’s set. Midway through the performance, Winwood emerged to lend his voice and guitar to two Sly Stone songs that the band has performed on occasion over the years. “What a treat,” Tedeschi observed as Winwood stepped out and the 13 players then charged into “Sing a Simple Song.” Following some fiery instrumental interchange both during and after that tune, the musicians eventually moved into “I Want to Take You Higher” which was incendiary in its own right.
On September 12 Fantasy Records issued the Mad Dogs & Englishmen Revisited (LIVE AT LOCKN’) via CD, vinyl and streaming. This release presents the September 2015 performance in which the TTB, members of the Mad Dogs & Englishmen collective (including Leon Russell, Rita Coolidge and Claudia Lennear), and additional special guests (such as Warren Haynes, Chris Robinson, John Bell, and Winwood’s former Traffic bandmate Dave Mason) paid homage to the original 1970 tour.
In a new Relix interview, Trucks shares his thoughts on the memorable night at LOCKN’. He also speaks about performing a few songs with Jerry Garcia’s Travis Bean guitar at Red Rocks last month, saying in part, “That instrument had a real spirit to it, and it was really fun to play. Some instruments just have a sound. I’m not the most versed in Jerry world like a lot of people are, but I immediately heard it and it made me want to play like him. I think about it a lot now since I’ve done it.” Additionally, Trucks reflects on the Kofi Burbridge Day of Service, which will take place on Saturday, September 19.
Tonight the Tedeschi Trucks Band will appear in Westport, CT while Steve Winwood picks up his tour on Monday in Beverly, MA.
