Sam Grisman Project Extend Tour into Fall with New Midwest Appearances

Acoustic pacesetter and pack leader Sam Grisman has compiled a list of pending appearances that will take him and his ever-shifting lineup of friends and collaborators on the road this summer and fall. The carrier of David “Dawg” Grisman’s songbook, who holds a deep and defining affinity for bluegrass titans that serve as personal proteges, will deliver tunes across the country with new dates paving a path into the Midwest at its furthest point.
According to the group’s latest dispatch of live appearances, they have added a new concert at Poplar Hall in Appleton, Wis., on November 12, ahead of their return to Garcia’s in Chicago for two nights of music on November 13 and 14. The aforementioned appearances follow an itinerary that includes subsequent summer concerts and festival appearances, beginning June 20 in Grass Valley, Calif., before their commitment to deliver a free show on July 4 in Breckenridge, Colo.
After kicking off the first of their summer concert series, Sam Grisman Project will pick up a bank of West Coast dates, beginning on July 10 at Field Hall in Port Angeles, Wash., with special guest Danny Barnes. They’ll pull down I-5 in pursuit of their July 11 follow-up at Portland, Ore.’s Revolution Hall, and their ensuing slot at the Oregon Country Fair on July 12.
On July 16, Grisman and company will put on another free concert, this time in Ridgeway, Colo., before their next commitment: a set at the Newport Folk Festival with frequent collaborator the great Peter Rowan on July 26. With Rowan in tow, the group will bring their talents to the Rex Foundation Benefit Concert in Berkeley, Calif., on Aug. 1, and Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, Pa., on August 5.
Grisman will break into trio format next, tapping Tim O’Brien and Victor Furtado for gigs on August 13 and 14 at Levon Helm Studios in Woodstock, N.Y., and a Green Mountain Fest set in Manchester, Vt., on August 15. Next on the docket, SGP has signed on for a series of September concerts in Tomson, Ga. (Sept. 12), and Annapolis, Md. (Sept. 19), before a crop of October dates which will take them to Turners Fall, Mass. (Oct. 2), Pelham, Tenn. (CaveFest, Oct. 10-11), Grass Valley, Calif., with Rowan (Strawberry Music Festival, Oct. 16).
Ultimately, the ensemble will take its regard for acoustic music to the aforementioned Poplar Hall appearance on Nov. 12, followed by two nights, Nov. 13-14, at Garcia’s in Chicago. According to the band’s latest social media post, its open-door policy will see an array of players take part in select concerts, such as Furtado, Max Flansburg, Dominick Leslie, John Mailander, Tod Patrick Livingston, Jesse Harper, Sam Leslie, Nat Smith, Alex Hargreaves, Jesse Appleman, Nate Leath and, as always, bandleader Sam Grisman.
