The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame has officially announced the nominees for its Class of 2025. 14 massive acts are listed as candidates this year, including first-time nods for Phish, Outkast and Joe Cocker. Not all of them will make the final cut; if history should serve as an example, just over half will be enshrined among music’s most greatest names
Eight of the artists under consideration this year are new to the ballot: jam titans Phish, Southern rap pathbreakers Outkast, blues-rock powerhouse Cocker, hard rock supergroup Bad Company, new wave figurehead Billy Idol, Southern rock torchbearers The Black Crowes, Mexican pop-rockers Maná and Chubby Checker, who popularized “The Twist” and famously protested the Hall of Fame in 2002 for his lack of recognition.
Other artists up for the honor in 2025 are The White Stripes, Cyndi Lauper, Mariah Carey, Soundgarden, Oasis, and both Joy Division and New Order, about whom the Hall details “created something revolutionary and massively influential, not once, but twice.” Nominees will be selected for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame by its international panel of 1,200 artists and music industry experts. Their choices are weighted by a vote from the fans at home, who can select up to seven artists from the roster each day through April 21, after which the final inductees will be revealed (get to work, phans).
“These remarkable Nominees have each created their own musical style and attitude, impacting generations of music lovers and contributing to the ever-evolving sounds and continued growth of rock & roll,” Chairman Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Foundation Chairman John Sykes offered in a release.
