Baltimore’s celebrated 8x10 club re-opened earlier this month. While a number of notable artists took the stage, Dogs in a Pile was the first group booked for a three-night run. The quintet appeared from Tuesday through Thursday this week, offering some animated performances over the course of these dates.

Opening night began with a 17-minute version of “Nicolette,” setting the tone for what was the follow. The first set also included an extended closing run from “Little Thing” into “Let U Go” and then “Earthbound Man.” The second frame began with “Grease” which led into a 16-minute “Snow Day.” The paired versions of “Lattice” and “Appleseed” later closed out the set in a memorable fashion.

The second show offered an early highlight with an expansive “Look Johnny,” which followed a cover of Steppenwolf’s “Magic Carpet Ride.” Later on, DIAP debuted The Reverend Horton Heat’s “I Can’t Surf” as the set-closer, which emerged from “You Didn’t Hear It From Me.” A memorable 55-minute sequence was the second-set highlight, moving from Dogs’ “It Gets Better” into The Meters’ “Cabbage Alley” then into the group’s “Thomas Duncan, Pt. 2” and “Bugle on the Shelf.”

Last night’s concluding performance included some of the run’s highlights. It began with a version of “Chop Shop” that bookended “Viola Lee Blues.” the Noah Lewis tune which was an early Grateful Dead staple. Later on, “Go Set” led into the group’s first ever take on The Rolling Stones “Miss You” and then back into “Go Set.” When the band emerged for set two, the quintet charged into a four-song segment that incorporated “Strangest Dreams,” Jefferson Airplane’s “White Rabbit,” the ending of “Thomas Duncan, Pt. 2” and “6 Little Lies.” Dogs In A Pile later debuted “Winter Blue” prior to Billy Preston’s “Will It Go 'Round In Circles?” The three-song encore culminated in a raucous cover of Led Zeppelin’s “No Quarter.”

Dogs In A Pile are off until they open a tour with Kitchen Dwellers on October 29 in Buffalo.
