On Saturday, August 9, moe. and Eggy pulled into Paw Paw, Mich., for the fourth performance in their stretch of shared summer dates. As the longstanding jam innovators continue their year-long 35th anniversary celebration with support from the rising quartet, they’ve used the opportunity to bolster explorations of their storied catalogs with fresh talent. For their latest date, the bands turned the tables, with moe.’s Al Schnier and Rob Derhak joining for a surprise sit-in during Eggy’s opening set.

Eggy took the stage at Warner Vineyards with “Between You and Me,” a semi-frequent live inclusion dating back to 2019. Currently touring as a trio of guitarist Jake Brownstein, drummer Alex Bailey and keyboardist Dani Battat while bassist Mike Goodman takes a mental health hiatus, the band deftly adjusted to fill out the low end on the 2024 Waiting Game standout “Come Up Slow,” then joined jam vehicles “Let It Rock” and “Broken Bluff” with a masterful improvised segue. After their second performance of the new original “Let Me Let Go,” which they debuted at Yuba, Wis.’s People Fest on Friday, the band returned to their most recent studio album for “Smile.” To cap off the performance, the group tapped Schnier and Derhak to lend guitar and bass to a cover of Tom Petty’s “You Don’t Know How it Feels,” marking their second cover of the Wildflowers essential to date.

Tomorrow, Aug. 12, moe. and Eggy will arrive in Interlochen, Mich., for another shared bill at Interlochen Center for the Arts. The bands will present three further Midwestern engagements through Aug. 16, then go their separate ways for more summer and fall touring.
