On Thursday, July 11, moe. brought its summer tour to The Big Apple for a performance at New York’s The Rooftop at Pier 17. Against a stunning city skyline, the band delivered a set tailored to the occasion with support from Daniel Donato, whose Cosmic Country opens for the legendary jam outfit on the tour.

Donato and Cosmic Country kicked off the show with its traditional mix of country standards and enticing originals tinted by the band’s distinctive psychedelic jam approach. New York attendees saw treatments of staples like the opener of Merle Haggard’s “Workin’ Man Blues” and the closing setlist staple of “Sugar Leg Rag,” originated by Cosmic Country pianist Nathan “Sugar Leg” Aronowitz.

After the intro, moe. stormed the stage with the setting-appropriate Dither classic “New York City.” The group built to a peak with fan favorites “Understand,” “Shoot First” and “Californ IA,” then went big in the mid-section with a string of highlights. The recent staple cover of Blind Melon’s “No Rain” brought the crowd to a roar, and the cover found a strong compliment in the later addition of Blind Faith’s “Can’t Find My Way Home.” Between these appeals, the jam heavyweights invited Donato to return for a sit-in on “Mexico,” the longstanding classic from 1994’s Headseed. In the wake of these thrills, moe. brought the show home with the closer of “Rebubula” and a final encore of “Gone.”
