Jeff Tweedy Launches Midwest Leg of ‘Twilight Override’ Tour with City-Specific Debuts and Artist Tributes

On March 10, Jeff Tweedy returned to the stage in the US. Having previously supported his new triple solo LP, Twilight Override, in Europe, the adept wordsmith and Wilco frontman’s latest slate of live appearances initiated a Midwest road trip, with the first night spent on the Hoyt Sherman Place stage in Des Moines. During Tuesday’s concert, Tweedy struck up locationally fitting encore debuts [considering the authors’ Iowa origins]: Arthur Russell’s “I Couldn’t Say It to Your Face” and Perfume Genius’ “Queen.” The pacesetter positioned the band’s final deliveries on Wednesday as well, spotlighting first-time covers by a pair of Nebraska artists.

Before last night’s debuts, Tweedy and his band of friends and family established their footing through a long series of originals, 21 tracks in total that hovered extensively on pulls off the new record, as well as his other solo catalog, Warm, Warmer, and Love is the King. Also sprinkled into the mix were choice Tweedy cuts from the bandleader’s father-and-son band with Spencer Tweedy, circa 2014.

The night’s encore revived the pattern of nodding to the location via the placements of debut covers, a trend picked up by Tweedy during his European tour stops–in London, he offered debuts of The Clash, Brian Eno, T. Rex, and The Kinks. True to form, during Wednesday’s concert in Omaha, Tweedy excavated first-time takes by Nebraska musicians, including outlaw country stalwart Tompall Glaser’s bittersweet “Streets of Baltimore” and 311’s “Amber.”

Tweedy’s next live appearance will take him to Denver’s Ogden Theatre on Friday, March 13. Time will tell if the pattern holds…

Tickets remain on sale for tomorrow’s show.
