Hermanos Gutiérrez Confirm New Record, ‘Los Ojos Del Cóndor’
Hermanos Gutiérrez will release a new album, Los Ojos Del Cóndor, on September 25 via Easy Eye Sound. Produced by Black Keys guitarist Dan Auerbach at his Easy Eye Sound studio in Nashville, the 10-track set is said to hone in on Swiss-Ecuadorian siblings Estevan and Alejandro Gutiérrez’s South American roots. As the the LP announce explains, they have traded “the wide-open spaces of the American West for the rhythms and textures of the Andes—a vivid new palette of sounds and influences from the continent that shaped them.” Coupled with the announcement, Hermanos Gutiérrez have also dropped a video for the track “Canto Andino.”
“That melody you hear in the chorus, that’s very happy and then it turns back into the dark, low tones of the slide,” Alejandro said in a statement about the tune. “It’s cool because that’s actually how the weather works in the Andes. You’ve got sunshine and then all of a sudden it’s so cloudy and looks like it might rain or even snow. ‘Canto Andino’ is a calling from that landscape that inspired us. This is a love letter to South America. What we want to do with this record is to invite people to come on another journey with us, this time through the Andes and to create a curiosity for this culture and for this part of the world.”
“As brothers, we are very similar, but then also we have different tastes,” Estevan added in another statement. “For example, I love salsa, my brother loves cumbia. For somebody that doesn’t know Latin music they think, ‘It’s almost the same.’ But it’s not. So whenever we compose new stuff, you can always hear that difference.”
Throughout Los Ojos Del Cóndor, Estevan plays the nylon guitar his father gave him when he was eight, while Alejandro introduces the charango guitar, which can be heard on “Canto Andino,” “Ciudad Inca,” “La Danza Del Viento” and “Tren Macho.”
The album artwork, a photo depicting two women and two llamas climbing a gentle hillside against a bright blue sky, was captured by Estevan almost by chance. He and Alejandro travelled to Peru in March with analog and Super 8 cameras in tow. “We were talking to these two women, and they were so cute with the llamas,” Estevan explained. “As we said goodbye, they walked up that hill, and we took that picture and everybody got goosebumps.”
Auerbach previously produced 2022’s breakout El Bueno Y El Malo and 2024’s Sonido Cósmico. For the forthcoming set, he recruited a number of Nashville players to flesh out the sessions.
In advance of the album’s release, Hermanos Gutiérrez will tour internationally, supporting Jack Johnson for much of June and July. They will remain on the road into the fall, including swings back through the United States and Europe.
