On Oct. 17, HBO will release David Byrne’s American Utopia a new film chronicling the Talking Heads frontman’s acclaimed tour-turned-Broadway show.

Academy Award winner Spike Lee directed the film, capturing a pre-pandemic performance from Byrne and his bombastic 11-piece live band.

The production company Participant also served as the lead financier and executive producer on the film.

“Pinch me,” Byrne said in February via press release. “This couldn’t have worked out better for this project. Spike Lee directing and Participant producing — two socially engaged teams, well, three if you count us in the band, coming together in what I feel will be something moving, important, and unlike anything anyone has seen before.”
