Goose Bust Out the Grateful Dead’s “U.S. Blues” and Other Covers While Constructing Setlist Phrase in Fort Lauderdale
Last night, Goose took the stage at the War Memorial Auditorium for their final venue-specific appearance in a string of two Fort Lauderdale, Fla. concerts on their current seasonal outing. The band’s Wednesday evening performance was one of the books as the group entered the jamband continuum by evoking a phrase using the first letters of choice songs that arrived during both halves of their live show. The effort involved revisiting long-forgotten covers to pick up the right letters and assemble the final result: “Suck It Storm.”
The construction of last night’s opening frame was built off their own “Same Old Shenanigans,” before an ensuing take on the Grateful Dead’s “U.S. Blues.” The aforementioned cover marked a bust-out for the band, whose last revival of the ’70s-era song took place on July 4, 2023. They tapped back into their bank of originals via “California Magic,” followed by another resuscitated cover, “Kung Fu Fighting,” performed for the first time since March 1, 2019.
Before capping the initial set of songs, Goose glued in “Iguana Song” and “Turned Clouds,” complete with a “Tumble” tease from Mitarotonda. The group’s return to the stage for the latter half of the night leaned into “SALT,” which kicked up a nod to “Crazy Train.” The lead guitarist’s previous tease of “Tumble” was solidified as the second song of the set. Without pause, the group ran through a final sequence of tracks: “The Old Man’s Boat” > “Red Bird” > “Madhuvan,” which, for keen-eyed attendees, brought the band’s “Suck It Storm” message into full view.
Despite the “storm” reference, there wasn’t any electricity pulsing from the clouds. Rather, online fan commentary suggested the message was intended as a playful response to a concert review pertaining to the previous show written by Ryan Storms… Also, tacked on to the main frames was a single song encore, a cover of Bruce Hornsby’s “The Way It Is.”
Next, Goose will arrive on stage in Clearwater, Fla., tomorrow, April 17. Tickets remain on sale.
