Fuzz (Ty Segall, Charles Moothart and Chad Ubovich) Preview ‘Fuzz’s Fourth Dream’ with “Jack The Maggot (Demo)”
Fuzz, the heavy garage-psych project of Ty Segall, Charles Moothart and Chad Ubovich, have unveiled Fuzz’s Fourth Dream. The trio’s forthcoming album, set to arrive via In the Red Records in late December, is their first release since 2021’s Levitation Sessions and a window into their history through unreleased demos, singles, and rarities. To preview the collection, they’ve shared “Jack The Maggot (demo),” accompanied by a video directed by Andrew Hooper.
“This collection really does give a proper road map to what this band is and was, as well as how the two connect,” guitarist and vocalist Moothart said in a statement. “Fuzz means a lot to me, and I have learned so much through these processes. Thank you to anyone who has been listening to these songs since the beginning, and thank you to anyone who is here for the first time. And, of course, thank you to everyone in between.”
“Jack the Maggot (demo)” shows off the rough roots of the cut from Fuzz’s 2015 sophomore album II, and it’s a slice of the same brutal, hazy proto-metal that’s defined their sound from the start. Fuzz’s origins date back to the early 2010s, when Moothart became a regular collaborator with Segall and joined his Ty Segall Band backing outfit. On a whim, the guitarist took a stab at writing classic hard-rock, and Segall quickly expressed an interest in pursuing it as a new outlet, with Ubovich signing on to add plodding bass to their chunky riffs and thundering drums in 2013.
“I remember jamming on guitar and drums with Ty at like 2 am in the garage (still feel bad for putting the neighbors through that),” Moothart reflected. “One day, under Ty’s guidance, I dragged a 388 in to the garage. I decided I wanted to write a Sabbath style riff just to see what happens. I laid down some drums, then came up with what would become ‘Fuzz’s Fourth Dream’. I showed Ty the ‘demo’ which was more of a sloppy idea. He basically said ‘let’s make this band’ … and Fuzz was off.”
Fuzz’s Fourth Dream is available to pre-order now. After the record’s release, the trio will reunite for a run of four California shows in January; Find tickets and more information here.
After Moothart departed from Segall’s Freedom Band in the wake of 2024’s Three Bells, Segall reexamined his creative process and returned with Possession. Learn more about the project in Segall’s recent Relix feature.
