Eggy Debut New Original in Memphis

Eggy rolled into Memphis, Tenn. last night, March 11, for a performance at the 1884 Lounge at Minglewood Hall. The second show in the indie-jam quartet’s spring tour built on a thrilling kickoff on Sunday night with another tight rotation of longtime setlist staples, held together with some scattered homages and punctuated by a previously unheard original.
Eggy started up their first set in the Home of the Blues with the steady, radiant and finally anthemic 2023 single “You,” then followed through with standalone treatments of “Apology” and the enduring 11-year-old deep cut “Balls of Yarn.” After combining the recent entry “Reflections” with Waiting Game cut “Shallow Rivers” for a slow-burning, contemplative centerpiece, the band shot off into “Atomic Age,” merged deftly into their well-worn cover of Little Feat’s “All That You Dream,” serendipitously preceding co-founder and pianist Bill Payne’s birthday today.
With their second set, Eggy shifted gears from the patient full-song focus of the first to privilege a dazzling, rapid-fire rotation rejoined by towering jams. “Sweaters for Strawmen,” accessorized with a playful “Reflectiong” excerpt from guitarist Jake Brownstein, gave way to “I Pray,” “Burritos El Chavo 2,” the classic “Bubagum,” “Bloomlight” and more, all swirled into an unpredictable push and pull that culminated in “Wayless.” To close out the show on a high note, the band split their encore treatment of “Waiting Game” with a fresh live debut of a track titled “Just a Couple of Strangs.”
