On Friday evening Billy Strings opened his three night Nashville run. The first two gigs were slated for the Bridgestone Arena. Then on Sunday, Strings and his high-flying band will close out the weekend at the Ryman Auditorium.

Last night’s show opened with a version of “Hello, City Limits,” the Johnny Elgin tune that has been in this group’s repertoire since 2022. The remainder of the first set blended Strings originals such as “Happy Hollow,” “Meet Me at the Creek” and “Home” along with a few covers, including Clarence Ashley’s “Old Man At The Mill,” Carter Stanley’s “Clinch Mountain Backstep” and “Miss The Mississippi And You,” a Doc Watson staple originally recorded by Jimmie Rodgers. The 10-song set closed out with Renewal favorite “Secrets.”

When Strings and his group emerged for the second frame, the five-piece expanded to a sextet with the addition of Edgar Winter. The legendary multi-instrumentalist shared vocals with Strings and played piano on Winter’s own “Fly Away.” Winter then contributed sax and vocals to “Ain’t Nothing To Me,” a tune that his late brother guitarist Johnny Winter recorded back in 1973. Winter remained on for Strings’ “Love and Regret” which featured a lyric change, as “Those old Hartford records that we used to play” became “Those old Johnny Winter records.” The group’s guest also participated on a ripping interpretation of Chuck Berry’s “Johnny B. Goode,” last performed on Halloween 2023.  The evening later concluded with a run from “Sally Goodin” to “Ridin’ That Midnight Train” before the band returned to deliver a two song encore of “Freedom” and “Y’all Come” performed around a single microphone.

Billy Strings, Billy Failing, Alex Hargreaves, Royal Masat and Jarrod Walker will be back at this evening in Music City.
