Courtney Barnett has announced her long-awaited fourth studio album, Creature of Habit. Out on March 27 via Mom+Pop Music, the Australian indie forerunner’s follow-up to 2022’s Things Take Time, Take Time manifests a torrent of questions about her life and future into ten tracks that boldly advance her sound. To preview the project, she’s shared the second single, “Site Unseen,” featuring Waxahatchee, as well as details on a spring and summer US tour.
“Site Unseen” is a shaggy and rambling uptempo rocker warm with resolve and understanding. Over a thumping tumble of drums, lyrical guitar strums and subtly shining strings, Barnett sings, “That indecision’s never been of much help to me/ And it won’t take long until I get my head together/ Either way, why don’t we stay awhile and see.” Her sentiments are echoed in close harmonies from Waxahatchee’s Katie Crutchfield throughout.
“I tried 3 separate times over 2 years to track this song, and each time it either wasn’t finished or didn’t sound right and each time we had to start again,” Barnett recalls. “I kept hearing this really high harmony in my head, so for the fourth and final version, I asked Katie if she’d be into singing it with me. I’m a big Waxahatchee fan. I really love Katie’s songwriting and her voice, so it was an honour to have her sing on Site Unseen.”
Barnett will introduce Creature of Habit with a spring North American tour, comprising 15 shows in Texas, the East Coast and the Midwest from May 1-22. She’ll resume her run at the end of the summer, with 10 further stops in the Midwest and West taking her to a home city finale at Los Angeles’ Hollywood Palladium on Aug. 29 alongside Built to Spill. Momma, Truman Sinclair, and Zoh Amba are committed as openers for the rest of the run. Tickets will become available through an artist presale tomorrow, Jan. 21 at 10 a.m. local, with a general on-sale to follow this Friday, Jan. 23 at 10 a.m. local time.
