Chick Corea passed away in 2021, but he lives on through his lifetime of legendary recordings and his indelible influence on the sound of countless musicians worldwide and across the musical spectrum. Today, Candid Records and Chick Corea Productions have unveiled plans to honor that legacy with Forever Yours: The Farewell Performance, a live album captured just four months before the jazz giant’s passing. To preview the record, set to arrive on Oct. 17, they’ve shared “Overjoyed,” an enchanting rendition of the Stevie Wonder standard.

“He looked up to the musicians he loved, and in his own exploration of some of their pieces, he found similarities between them–even if centuries separated their works,” Corea’s longtime collaborator Bernie Kirsch said of his unique, eclectic artistic perspective. “By combining such works in his solo performances, say a Mozart with a Gershwin, he could showcase some unexpected connections in an exciting way.”

Forever Yours: The Farewell Performance was recorded in Oct. 2020 during a pair of masterful solo piano concerts at Clearwater, Fla.’s Ruth Eckerd Hall. Through the course of the shows, the 28-time Grammy winner and NEA Jazz Master pored over his expansive repertoire, sweeping boldly and lyrically from unforgettable originals like “Armando’s Rhumba” to a mini-recital of his celebrated Children’s Songs. Alongside his own discography, Corea included reinvented and reverent treatments of some of his favorite songs, including works by Thelonious Monk, Bud Powell, Mozart, Bill Evans and Duke Ellington. Between songs, he freely shared his reflections on the music, fostering an intimacy that was rewarded with two soul-stirring improvisatory “Portrait” pieces.
