Pixies have announced an expanded reissue of their 2001 Complete B-Sides: 1988-97 compilation, set to release on June 26 via 4AD. As part of the continued celebration of the alt-rock powerhouse’s 40-year anniversary, the re-release features beloved rarities from their origins and heyday, bolstered by six more archival live recordings. To preview the set, they’ve shared a live version of “Planet of Sound,” recorded at the Brixton Academy on July 26, 1991 and first released on a vinyl single backing “Alec Eiffel” in the same year.
Complete B-Sides: 1988-97 is stacked with cult classics of Pixies’ early catalog like “Wave of Mutilation (UK Surf),” “Manta Ray,” “River Eupherates” and “Bailey’s Walk,” plus instrumentals “Velvety” and “Letter to Memphis” and live versions of “Vamos” and “In Heaven,” their cover of the “Lady in the Radiator Song” from David Lynch’s Eraserhead. On top of the original 18-song tracklist, all remastered from the original analog tapes by longtime archival engineer Kevin Vanbergen, the reissue adds live treatments of “Planet of Sound” and “Tame” (from the “Alec Eiffel” single), “Debaser” (from their 1991 Head On EP), and “Holiday Song,” “Cactus” and “Nimrod’s Son” (from 1997’s Debaser (Live)). Originally released as a CD, the collection’s 25th-anniversary reissue will be its first vinyl pressing.
Complete B-Sides: 1988-97 is available to pre-order now. Pixies, featuring co-founders Frank Black, Joey Santiago and David Lovering with new bassist Emma Richardson since 2024, will mount an expansive European tour this summer, then return to the US for a fistful of North American festival bookings in September.
