Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band Kick Off First Tour in Six Years
Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band returned to the stage last night at Amalie Arena in Tampa, Fla., for the first time since their last tour which occurred in 2017. The Wednesday night concert in the Sunshine State included debuts of “Last Man Standing” and “Burnin’ Train,” in addition to a memorable roll call, in which Springsteen name-dropped all 19 band members during the night’s encore.
The packed 21-song main set got underway with “No Surrender” and “Ghost” before the ensemble turned their attention to the night’s rendition of “Prove It All Night.” After working through several tunes from across their extensive repertoire, Springsteen and company landed on a pair of covers, which included a take on the Commodores’ “Nightshift” and the Ben E. King penned “Don’t Play That Song (You Lied).”
“E Street Shuffled” emerged before “Johnny 99,” then the group traded in their electric instruments for acoustic and delivered a live debut of “Last Man Standing,” which was released on the 2020 LP, Letter to You. After running through “House of a Thousand Guitars” and “Backstreets,” the group took on Patti Smith Band’s “Because the Night.” The main set brought forth “She’s The One,” “Wrecking Ball,” “The Rising,” and a frame closing “Badlands.”
Springsteen & The E Street Band kicked off their encore with a live debut of “Burnin’ Train,” another number that initially appeared on the Letter to You album. Next, the title track off Springsteen’s 1975 Billboard chart-topper, Born to Run, was added, before “Rosalita (Come Out Tonight),” “Glory Days” and “Dancing in the Dark,” which was preceded by band introductions. Then, the group collectively delivered “Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out” before Springsteen unleashed the final song of the night, a solo acoustic take on “I’ll See You in My Dreams.”
