Björk has shared details behind her forthcoming album, Fossora, which will arrive on Sept. 30 via One Little Independent Records. Today, the artist took to Instagram to reveal the album’s leading image, which was shot by Vidar Jogi, and some sentiments behind the long-awaited collection of new material.
In a post shared by the art-pop monarch, Björk revealed: “each album always starts with a feeling that I try to shape into sound this time around, the feeling was landing on the earth and digging my feet into the ground (after my last album utopia which was all island in the clouds element air and no bass).”
She continued, “it was also woven into how I experienced the ‘now’ this time around 7 billion of us did it together nesting in our homes quarantining being long enough in one place that we shot down roots.” Then, Björk followed up with details pertaining to the album’s sound, “so sonically it is about bass, heavy bottom-end, we have 6 bass clarinets and punchy sub.”
The impending release is the Icelandic artist’s first in nearly five years, after 2017’s Utopia. Comprised of 13-tracks, Fossora was written during the COVID-19 lockdowns, when the masses had an extended period to look inward and reflect as our world shifted into social confinement.
In addition to new music, the artist’s new podcast, dubbed Björk: Sonic Symbolism, will premiere tomorrow, Thursday, Sept. 1. The nine-episode series will dig into information behind the musician’s solo albums leading to her latest, Fossora.
