Watch Jim James’ Gorgeous Take on Sly & the Family Stone’s “Everyday People” for the ‘Tonight Show’ Cover Room

Earlier this month, Jim James stopped by The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon in support of his new solo album Uniform Clarity (a stripped-down reworking of his recent effort Uniform Distortion), and the My Morning Jacket frontman found some time to take part in the late-night talk show’s Cover Room series, delivering a great take on Sly & the Family Stone’s classic “Everyday People.”

James has long been a proponent of bringing people together and fighting for positive change—including during his current “The Future is Voting” event series with HeadCount—making “Everyday People” a fitting choice for him to cover. Backed by the same five-piece background vocal group that joined him on the Tonight Show taping and armed with only his guitar and voice, James easily croons the bouncy verses of the late-’60s hit and absolutely nails the triumphant refrains. And the fact that everyone is smiling during the entirety of the short tune makes it a perfect video for those early workweek blues.
