Umphrey’s McGee Take Las Vegas (A Gallery)
Umphrey’s McGee brought the sixth annual UMBowl event to the newly opened Brooklyn Bowl Las Vegas on Friday night. The show featured four quarters each with their own theme, packing covers, originals and plenty of improvisation to what would end up as a five hour show when it was all said and done. Appropriately, the night was set to a Swingers theme and before each set, a video was shown with the band members acting as the characters from the cult-Vegas film.
Night two saw the band play what Joel Cummins called afterwards one that “may be show of the year so far,” as they mixed in two sets packed full of improv and surprises including playing the beginning of “All in Time” and the end of “Bridgeless,” finishing up what they had left open-ended the night before. Set two also saw an extended “Educated Guess” as well as a surprise “25 or 6 to 4” jam in “Bright Lights Big City.” The “Hurt Bird Bath” that anchored the second set also stood out, extending in both improv sections. Wayne Posner and Alex Fornes shared images from both shows.
