Portugal. The Man Unveil 10th Studio Album ‘SHISH’ with “Mush” and “Tanana”

Portugal. The Man have announced their 10th studio album, SHISH. Arriving on Nov. 7 via KNIK, their Thirty Tigers imprint, the Grammy-winning indie-rock mainstays’ next project shows them braving fearsome new sonic possibilities and drawing inspiration from their origins in Alaska. It follows their surprise summer EP, uLu Selects Vol #2, and their acclaimed 2023 album Chris Black Changed My Life.
Portugal. The Man shared a first glimpse of their next chapter three weeks ago with “Denali,” the album’s scuzzy, bombastic opening track. Today, they’ve expanded that view with two more singles, “Tanana” and “Mush,” which respectively explore sugary, spiraling baroque pop and frenetic, high-shine garage rock.
“‘Mush’ is survival, connection, and ambition,” frontman John Gourley shared. “Rural life with moments of danger and absurdity, like dirt bikes, smokers, gunfire, and video games. The repeated line ‘we can be family’ pushes against isolation, reaching for something solid. This is a repeating theme on the record – build a life, support your people, buy land, and grow something lasting. The message is simple: don’t give up, want more, and fight for it. Meanwhile, ‘Tanana’ voices a generational sadness, searching for fleeting meaning in a world on edge.”
On November 6 and 7, Portugal. The Man will return to the stage with a two-night hometown tour kickoff from Portland, Ore.’s Revolution Hall. Through Dec. 12, they’ll present 19 further performances at beloved indie haunts across the country, including Oakland, Calif.’s Fox Theater, Denver’s The Mission Ballroom, Minneapolis’ First Avenue, Chicago’s The Salt Shed, New York’s Terminal 5, Philadelphia’s Union Transfer, Washington, D.C.’s The Anthem, Atlanta’s The Eastern, Austin’s Moody Theater and more.
