Big Freedia, Ben Jaffe, Tarriona “Tank” Ball, Stanton Moore, Charlie Gabriel and More to Celebrate New Orleans Music and Culture at Toulouse Theatre

During the days between Jazz Fest weekends, Relix will celebrate the rich musical heritage and culture of New Orleans with discussions and performances with NOLA legends at the Toulouse Theatre in New Orleans from May 2 through 4, starting at 5 p.m. local time.

The first of the three days–Monday, May 2–will be hosted by “The Queen of Rare Groove,” WWOZ programmer DJ Soul Sister who will welcome Big Freedia, along with Tarriona “Tank” Ball and Joshua Johnson of Tank and the Bangas. They’ll cover the individual influences New Orleans music, culture, and heritage had on them as artists and the return of live music to the Crescent City. There will also be an intimate performance by Tank and The Bangas.

Tuesday, May 3, will be hosted by legendary 89-year old Preservation Hall clarinetist Charlie Gabriel who will be joined by Preservation Hall creative director Ben Jaffe, and guitarist Joshua Starkman for a conversation about the rich musical history of New Orleans, through the songs recorded on Gabriel’s new LP, 89. The multi-generational trio will come together on stage for the first time, performing a mix of original music and New Orleans jazz standards.

Wednesday, May 4, will bring together a special group of guests who are responsible for the revival of Tipitina’s, including Ben Ellman, Robert Mercurio, and Stanton Moore, and their bandmates from Galactic, who purchased and revitalized the iconic venue in 2018. They’re set to reflect and converse on the difficulties they’ve faced and overcame along with their plan to propel Tipitina’s into a new era of success. Following the discussion, there will be a rare performance by Ellman, Mercurio, and Moore.

During the event, guests will be able to sample a new range of premium, ready-to-serve cocktails by Batch & Bottle Cocktails and have the opportunity to signup for a chance to win an AT-LP60X turntable from Audio-Technica.

A portion of proceeds and an on-site auction will benefit Robe Backstage, a non-profit created to help support lighting professionals and technicians facing financial challenges.
