Basically Frightened: The Musical Madness of Colonel Bruce Hampton is a documentary film that shares the life and music of Aquarium Rescue Unit founder and jamband scene inspiration Colonel Bruce Hampton. The film debuted at the 2012 Atlanta Film Festival and later took the honors for Best Music Documentary at the 2013 Macon Film Festival. Basically Frightened presents commentary from a diverse group of musicians, including Mike Gordon, Dave Matthews, Susan Tedeschi, Chuck Leavell, R.E.M.’s Peter Buck, Widespread Panic, Blues Traveler, Bill Kreutzmann, Derek Trucks and the members of ARU, as well as Billy Bob Thornton, who cast Col. Bruce in his film Sling Blade. The documentary has just been released in a special limited edition, which includes a bonus disc with 89 minutes of Col. Bruce live footage, including performances on stage with Widespread Panic and with Aquarium Rescue Unit.
