Weather Report: The Legendary Live Tapes 1978–1981

Jazz-fusion music has undergone such a twisty trajectory since its heyday: At first, the melding of rock power with jazz improvisation was considered nothing less than revolutionary, then it fell out of favor and, now, it’s experiencing something of a renaissance. But the impact of Weather Report has never been in question. This was a band that, at its peak (represented here on a four-disc collection of previously unreleased live material) included four undisputed geniuses: keyboardist Joe Zawinul, saxophonist Wayne Shorter, drummer Peter Erskine and, perhaps the most celebrated bassist in jazz history, Jaco Pastorius. Oddly, quality live recordings of this outfit (augmented on half the tracks by percussionist Robert Thomas Jr.) have always been relatively elusive, so this box set is irrefutably a major addition to the Weather Report discography. While there are undoubtedly moments of excess—solos and jams that simply outstay their welcome—most of the music is sublime: 1978 Tokyo recordings of Zawinul’s “Birdland” and “Black Market” showcase each musician’s strengths as soloists and ensemble players, and the conversation between Shorter and the others on his “Port Of Entry” will leave your jaw hanging in awe. And if you’ve ever thought bass solos had to be boring by their very nature, Pastorius’ two eight-minute displays here will obliterate that idea from your mind forever.
