Various Artists: Looking Into You: A Tribute to Jackson Browne

Jackson Browne was 16 years old when he wrote “These Days,” a prescient example of the craftsmanship he would spend his life perfecting. Fifty years later, old friend Don Henley joins young indie-Americana act Blind Pilot to recast the tune as a country hymn, the first of 23 songs on this tribute to Browne’s work. The remaining cuts are doled out to a nice cross section of pals like Bonnie Raitt and David Lindley, living legends like Lyle Lovett and Bruce Springsteen, and younger musicians such as Paul Thorn and Griffin House. Thorn’s take on “Doctor My Eyes,” delivered as a blues shuffle, is an interesting variation on the original, while Bob Schneider’s pensive translation of “Running On Empty” is cataloged as a slow ballad. Of those who stayed close to the originals, Indigo Girls’ version of “Fountain Of Sorrow,” Kevin Welch’s “Looking Into You” and Karla Bonoff’s “Something Fine” are all particularly strong. Not surprisingly, Lucinda Williams’ reading of “The Pretender” is a true gem. From Henley’s opening salvo to the thoughtfully placed closer, JD Souther’s “My Opening Farewell,” there are only world-class artists delivering world-class tributes. It’s a worthy addition to the library of any fan of great American songwriting.
