Various Artists: A Buck Dancer’s Choice

On Dec. 1, 2012 at The Fillmore in San Francisco, The Rex Foundation put on a benefit concert in honor of former Grateful Dead manager, Jon McIntire. A Buck Dancer’s Choice chronicles that evening in a 19-song, live doubledisc that features members of ALO, the Grateful Dead and Widespread Panic. The show kicks off with three invitingly accessible tracks (“Listen to the River,” “Easy,” “Falling Dominoes”) by ALO members Lebo, Dave Brogan and Steve Adams. Bob Weir soon joins them for exploratory takes on “Me and My Uncle” and an acoustic “Dark Star,” before moving into his own solo acoustic set that finds the jamband pioneer passionately wailing on heartfelt renditions of “Loose Lucy” and “Playin’ in the Band.” But during the third set, Mickey Hart Band with Widespread Panic bassist Dave Schools take the stage, and the album fully blooms in its most brilliant colors. Grateful Dead staples “Samson And Delilah” and “Brokedown Palace” come to life in pitch-perfect reprisals of these fan-favorite essentials. Weir joins the band again for thoroughly satisfying performances of “China Cat Sunflower,” and Dead go-to traditional “I Know You Rider.” This is a great album, for a great cause.
