With an edgy, anything-goes genre like dubstep, it’s virtually impossible to properly classify its off the rails bass-driven sound. Each dubstepper has a different sonic point of view with signature quirks – and the resulting racket is a disparate array of noisy jams, varying from dark and dirty club grinders to anthemic bangers that sound like house music’s dangerous younger brother. Thankfully, of-the-moment producer Diplo has put together Blow Your Head–Diplo Presents: Dubstep, a comprehensive compilation of this post-drum and bass dance phenom. A mish-mash of veterans and up-and-comers, Blow Your Head vibrates the speakers with earth-shaking bass blasts on Benga’s “26 Basslines,” garage-y grooves on Doctor P’s “Sweet Shop,” and dissonant mayhem on Diplo’s “U Don’t Like Me,” which features a scream-tastic cameo from hip-hop loudmouth Lil’ Jon.
