The Polyphonic Spree: Yes, It’s True

Good

It makes sense that The Polyphonic Spree wrote and recorded Yes, It’s True in stages, pausing to unveil a holiday disc, Holidaydream: Sounds of the Holidays Vol. 1, last October. Although there is cohesion in the Dallas-based collective’s eclectic, symphonic pop, the tracks on the album feel like solitary creations, each resonating with its own compelling strangeness. Opener “You Don’t Know Me,” a surging indie pop number, stands in stark contrast to hushed piano ballad “You’re Golden,” an emotive love song. The album as a whole works like a movie soundtrack – a medium with which The Polyphonic Spree are deeply familiar – and each track evokes a new emotional tone. The sonically bizarre elements that comprise this group are present, but now all seem so rooted in the band’s identity that the off-kilter sounds feel intimately welcome.
