What seems on paper to be an odd grouping, The Gaddabouts – songstress Edie Brickell, ubiquitous drum-pounder extraordinaire Steve Gadd, bassist Pino Palladino (The Who) and Welsh guitarist and Clapton sidekick Andy Fairweather Low – are instead, natural. This double-disc follow up to last year’s self-titled debut is a loose-limbed affair: Despite their credentials as powerhouse players, Gadd and the others take a casual, shuffling approach here that ideally suits Brickell’s easygoing songs and Texan drawl. A handful of guests (among them jazz organist Larry Goldings) flesh out the coffeehouse feel that characterizes much of the record. Look Out Now! doesn’t attempt to make any grand statements; it’s all about the bonding that happens when seasoned pros – even those who float in different orbits – get together for the sheer joy of making music.
