Without sacrificing the formal convention of its project – one drummer, one guitarist – The Dodos’ No Color is the fullest realization of Meric Long and Logan Kroeber’s vision yet. Theirs is an accessible, song-driven music that is fun to listen to with the windows open. The ease with which Long and Kroeber execute propulsive, left-hooking numbers like “Going Under” and “Sleep” also cloaks a complex musical conversation between the two. While other voices are common, No Color paints the syncopated space between Kroeber’s rhythms and Long’s intricate fingerpicking. The textures go flamenco ( “Companions” ), get their grunge on ( “Good” ) and hum like the rare birds they are.
