Jim Kweskin:  Never Too Late

You can’t even begin to have a conversation about the 1960s folk revival without talking about the Jim Kweskin Jug Band. The singer and guitarist introduced acoustic music combining folk, blues and jazz to many thousands of young people at the time, and also provided a launching pad for artists like Geoff Muldaur and his then-wife Maria. Jim Kweskin, at 83, is still active, and although he’s been out of the spotlight for many decades, he’s still got some things to say—in the way he’s been saying them all along. Never Too Late, his latest album release, is subtitled “Duets With My Friends,” and while only Maria Muldaur is a household name among those friends, several are simpatico collaborators. Muldaur, in fact, starts things off, trading lines with Kweskin on “Let’s Get Happy Together,” an upbeat jug band-style number that brings to mind not only Kweskin’s early work but also that of one of his more prominent disciples, Dan Hicks. That song, written by Lil Hardin Armstrong (Louis’ first wife) in the late ‘30s, is one of several vintage tunes that Kweskin and his collaborators adapt to his trademark style easily. “Side By Side,” a standard dating to the late ‘20s, is one of several duets with Fiona Kweskin, Jim’s granddaughter; they retain the good-natured vibe of the song as well as its old-timey instrumentation. Other contributors include singers Rose Guerin (who joins the leader in a revisit to “Relax Your Mind,” the title track of his 1966 album) and Samoa Wilson, both of whom have worked with Kweskin in the past, as well as vocalists Meredith Axelrod and Juli Crockett, whose voices mesh particularly well with Kweskin’s. There’s nothing gimmicky about Jim Kweskin’s music: For 60 years, so far, he’s pounded the same beat, always with love and affection for this tireless American music.
