Tame Impala: Lonerism

Modular
Lonerism, the sophomore effort from Perth, Australia psych-rock warriors Tame Impala, is a heady leap in the group’s astral sound quest. Recorded on the heels of their debut LP, Innerspeaker, the album exploits a similar collection of ‘60s-inspired psych influences, with a revisionist approach that sounds as though MGMT and Acid Mothers Temple had a baby who sings like John Lennon. Lonerism expands on the psychedelic sounds heard on the debut, mostly with the addition of swirling, flanged synth explorations and (even more) expansive, transcendent jams. Throughout the album’s 12 tracks, a progression toward a more experimental, electronic, and at times, pop-ish sound shines through – perhaps indicating the next turn for Tame Impala. As with the previous effort, Lonerism is an fully-realized album that is best enjoyed as a whole.
