While Rusty Anderson may be best known for donating his guitar chops to a slew of high-profile musicians like Sir Paul McCartney, Willie Nelson, Elton John, Regina Spektor and Ozzy Osbourne, his most recent solo album attempts to set him apart from these acts. Born on Earth, recorded in Los Angeles, is chock-full of Southern California soft rock tunes reminiscent of Phantom Planet or Rooney. However, Anderson’s impressive ability to manipulate his guitar playing adds a dynamic layer of depth to otherwise straightforward, power-pop songs. Highlights are the spacey “Under a White Star” and the wistful “Where Would We Go.” Although the lyrics are a little trite, Anderson seems to be innately skilled in inventing catchy and memorable melodies.
