Sheff’s versatile indie rock band Okkervil River backs Erickson on the album and knows when to lay back and let Erickson simply strum and sing in his cracked: Okkervil give the songs an inspired lift, making “Bring Back the Past” into crisp twang-pop and edging “Forever” and “Think of As One” toward string-and horn-softened country-soul.
