Ricky Skaggs: Mosaic

7:00 AM EDT on September 24, 2010

Skaggs Family

Sure, you’ll hear standard bluegrass instrumentation and close vocal harmonies on Mosaic, a collection of songs that address Ricky Skaggs’ faith. But wait just a second ‘cause this ain’t your run-of-the-mill gospel record. Those wooden instruments are joined by electric guitar (played by Peter Frampton on one track!), drums and keys – not to mention full orchestra, choir and even some bagpipes – and those harmonies are more akin to something from the top of the pops than from the Opry. Mosaic doesn’t deviate radically from familiar S kaggs territory as much as it broadens it – nor does it attempt to pound home its message. Although undeniably Christian-based in its orientation, Skaggs’ inspirational music has more to do with universal truths and good advice than the tenets of any specific religion.
