Perpetual Groove: Heal

Self-Released

Heal is the fourth studio release from Athens, Ga.-based Perpetual Groove, and its first with keyboardist, John Hruby and producer Dave Barbe. Since 2007’s LiveLoveDie, PGroove has taken its time in crafting an album that compliments Hruby’s subtle contributions on keys and Butler’s heartfelt vocals and string playing. Unlike previous albums, which have focused on the all-out onslaught of the band’s live set and a heavier, spacier soundscape, Heal is a stripped-down snapshot of a more mature band. The album manages to capitalize on the band’s biggest strength – frontman Brock Butler’s songwriting and introspective lyrics. “Under Lock and Key,” “A Day the Way” and the closing number, “Lost Connection” reinforce the straight-ahead focus that is emotive, both lyrically, and even more so musically.
