Lissie: My Wild West

Lissie Maurus may be on her third LP, but the Illinois native’s vocals still carry all the shocking punch of gale-force winds, and to hear her tear into the chorus of “Sun Keeps Risin’” or “Daughters” is to hear her for the first time—even if you’ve been a fan since her humble, acoustic beginnings nearly a decade ago. Subsequent albums layered heavy guitars around her best instrument, but with My Wild West, she’s stripped things down to barebones once again and let her voice reign supreme. The vibe throughout is dusty and lonesome, but hopeful. On tracks like “Hero,” guitars whip around her Stevie-Nicks-like fairy-dust vocals, “Play the part of the blushing bride, tame the horse and take it for a ride… I want my 40 acres in the sun.” Lissie’s songwriting has been stronger on previous efforts, but she delivers enough classic-rock magic here to tune in.
