Kirby Sewell Band: Bought Myself a Hammer

Listen to the “You’ve Been a Bad Bad Girl” on the new album Bought Myself a Hammer by The Kirby Sewell Band and you may feel as if you’re hearing the second coming of Jerry Lee Lewis. But then switch to “Bought Myself a Hammer” or “White Light, White Heat,” and you might flash on the blues sound of Sam Cooke. Plenty of contemporary musicians have a newfound love affair with the blues, but few seem to pull off the various styles as cheekily and adeptly as this six-piece group. Major credit has to go to frontman Sewell’s lead vocals that are as steamy as a Memphis summer day, but equal credit goes to the sultry guitar, and pulsating percussion including strong keys that weave through but never dominate the music. Fasten your seatbelts, blues fans. The Kirby Sewell Band is coming to get ya.
